Behind The Scenes – The Bathroom Door

 

So I’ve been working with Unity on and off for about 2 years now and when I was randomly browsing games on itch.io, I saw that Brackeys Game Jam was starting in some days. So I decided to try and see if I was finally at a place where I could realistically try and make a game in a week.

Games have always been a huge part of me and I have been interested in creating worlds on my computer ever since I was a kid. Back then I was really into stuff like making custom maps for Warcraft 3 and modding whatever game I was playing (morrowind, max payne, etc),using way more time on modding games than actually playing them.

 

And now here is a “short” overview on how the week went, as per the logbook that I wrote.

Yes it is bit all over the place.

11/02-2024

So finally the day has come. The day the theme of this years Brackeys Game Jam is revealed. So of course I whip up a pot of coffee, bake cookies and wait excitedly for the announcement. And alas! The theme I had hoped for. “Whats behind the door?”.

So I get to work everything is going im flowing aaaand.

My PC freezes up. Cinemachine starts bugging out. And I lose quite a bit of progress. No worries. We have a whole week! So I get started again, fire up a bad boy, feel the flow aaand 40 minutes after I crash again.

 Get back to it, grinding all day like a madman, everything is promising I grind and grind, aaaand.

I accept defeat. I tried using the Haunted PSX render pipeline, and everything looked great in the editor but as soon as I tried building the project everything was grey, pink and weird, so after a lot of denial and hesitation, I go to bed and hope its just temporary burnout from looking at things that don’t work.

Wake up and start from scratch.

 Find out I’m out of medicine. Need to go buy some. They don’t have it, so I have to go to           the other apothecary all the way                    downtown. Yay.

Ran out of coffee. Frustration rises.

13/02

Grind, mild burnout, just basic functionality

14/02   

Got up, started working on custom LUA functions for the Dialogue Manager for unity, get extremely frustrated because it’s definitely not working, and I decide to bake more cake in pure frustration. Then got a visit from my mother who brought coffee, even though its too late for today, I am hoping for renewed energy tomorrow!

15-16/02

Just grinding, forgot to write logbook these days, but I think that with my focus back on track due to excess caffeine intake I was just to focused on the project, and I got quite a bit done.

17/02

finally get to my favorite part. Audio! have been saving this last day for audio and whaddaya know?? i used unity's recorder yesterday to make some screenshots and apparently there's a bug where it just forces mute on the editor. So now i have to build every time i want to check any changes in audio. F*****g great!

Turns out it just put a mute on in the game window, so even though I kept trying to unmute in editor window it went mute on play.

Used an hour on that and am now left completely cluttered in my mind due to panic and moderate to severe burnout lol.

Sadly don’t get as much work done on audio as I wanted to but I manage to get 2 tracks ready, 1 for main menu and one for the end screen.

                Wake up, go to PC, upload game and go back to sleep until Game Jam launches!
